Sinking (2019) explores the ideology that individuals are trained to fit into and follow the rules of the capitalist social system in order to thrive in modern society.
The video fragments were recorded in a seafood market, featuring people discussing which types of sea fish were cheap and good, juxtaposed with dreamy scenes from the goldfish market and staged videos shot with fashion dolls. The subtle assimilation of social values and gender roles often evokes feelings of erasure of identity and a lack of recognition. The entire concept is presented through metaphors of ornamental goldfish, which were artificially cultivated by ancient Chinese, and sea fish.
The work also raises the question of whether to live in a transparent fishbowl, where life depends on the feeder, or to be a sea fish with freedom but might swallow the bait and be eaten in someday. Nevertheless, both represent different ways of living, and it remains an open question as to which is better.
